At the end of the penultimate episode of season 1, I was sure we were going to see a violent car crash in the finale. We were finally going to get the answer about what happened to Jack and why Kate feels such intense guilt about his death.

Warning: The below contains vague spoilers. Read at your own risk.

But then I watched the brilliance of the finale. Seeing how Jack and Rebecca met satisfied my curiosity about how this great love story that has been referenced began. Seeing Jack at the precipice of a detrimental life choice and how he was deterred by the sound of her voice is the stuff out of fairy tales. What little girl doesn't imagine her future husband stopping on a dime the first time he sees her?

As we have approached this final episode and seen the state of Jack and Rebecca's marriage, I don't think any of us can say that Rebecca's tour was a good move for the marriage. The foundation beneath that marriage had started to crumble and now, we get to see if they repair it or if they let it crumble.

The fight.

I have to imagine that married couples everywhere felt that fight in their core. I sure did. Maybe the words weren't the same, but at some point, every marriage has an argument of that same intensity. How arguments like that and their aftermath are handled speak to the health and longevity of the marriage.

Jack and Rebecca have certainly taught us a lot about #relationshipgoals but we still have a lot to learn about them. Do they come back from this? Are they weakened? Are they a stronger force than before? And how the hell did Miguel get married to Rebecca?

This is Us has given us a real look at life. The good, the bad, the amazing and the horrible. The writers have not pulled any punches in giving us a show that is based in the reality of life...maybe a bit dramatized. The emotions they show are raw and real. The truths they show are deep. And we have reacted. Tears are common. Laughter is common. Being emotionally exhausted after an episode is a real occurrence around the country.

My final thought is based on the last thing Jack said to Rebecca before he left. It left me weak in the knees and brought me back to his side.

"You're not just my great love story, Rebecca. You were my big break."

And now, I need to re-watch some of the previous episodes to see when and what caused Jack to start sliding again. Because it seems, that with This is Us, as with life, hindsight is 20/20.

Bring on Season 2! See you at Costco to get my season's worth of Kleenex and wine!
