A Look at Planning a Cruise: Picking Your Cruise

When you are picking your cruise, there are many things to consider. Let's talk them through.

How long do you want to cruise?

We love the 7 night cruise because we feel like that gives us time to really enjoy the ports and the ship. Our most recent dream is to retire to a cruise ship that travels the globe. So, I guess you could say that we love to cruise. Some people like a quick cruise...a 3 night. Its all about preference.

Price.

Cruises advertise their starting at rate as an interior double occupancy room. You can do a 7 night Caribbean cruise during a value season for about $500 per person in an interior room on Carnival. But that number goes higher with other cruise lines. Norwegian and Royal Caribbean are about $750 per person. Disney Cruise Line is about $1500 per person for the same type of cruise.

Where do you want to go?

We have only cruised to the Caribbean, but we have dreams of doing a Canadian cruise, an Alaska cruise, a Panama Canal cruise, a Trans-Atlantic cruise, a Mediterranean cruise and a Norwegian cruise. You can cruise pretty well anywhere but the Caribbean cruises tend to be the least expensive, at least from the eastern United States.

What ship amenities are important?

Do you want lots of dining options? Do you want a great water slide? Do you want a world class spa? Do you want more things for your kids to do? Are you a casino fan? These are all things to look for. Ships coming out of dry docks lately have had some fantastic additions.

Do you have a preference on port?

For this cruise, and the 2011 cruise, I wanted a port I could drive to...we chose Miami, but we are road warriors, so the 12 hour drive time doesn't really deter us. But if you are close to say, Charleston and want to sail out of Charleston, that limits your options.

After looking at all those categories, it is time to book your cruise!

We just booked our cruise with Carnival and we will be going to Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, the Bahamas and Grand Turk!!!!!!!
