I have read two Susan Meissner books this past month and LOVED them.
A Fall of Marigolds caused me to break down into sobs in the car while my husband and I were on the way home from our errand date a couple of weeks ago. I mean, full on, gasping sobs. My husband was sure I had gotten a text with some devastating news, until I was able to show him my Kindle and communicate everyone in our world was ok. A Fall of Marigolds is set in New York. The historical story is set post Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire and the main character is a survivor of that fire. The contemporary story is set post 9/11 and the main character lost her husband in the World Trade Center.
Because I loved A Fall of Marigolds so much, I read A Bridge Across the Ocean and while I was not quite as moved by the story, I really liked it. A Bridge Across the Ocean is set in Europe and California. The historical story is set during and after World War II and the main characters are War Brides. The contemporary story is set in current day and the main character struggles with her reality.
Meissner has a talent for weaving together stories from the past and stories from the present that I have not seen before. The common thread between the past and the present is so obscure that even when I tried to put my finger on it while reading the second novel, I was not able to.
Normally, I tend to shy away from books that have multiple narrators and shift from past to present and back, Meissner has figured out how to change narrators and time lines well.
Pick up a book by Susan Meissner soon! Please!
