Politics: Not Sure Who I am Anymore

I am a registered Republican.
I have been a registered Republican since I moved to Tennessee in 2005. When I originally registered to vote, I registered Independent, because I wasn't sure what I really believed and how what I did believe fell into the political spectrum.
Today, I do know myself. I believe in the Constitution first and foremost. I believe in a more limited federal government. I believe in lower taxes. I believe in a strong military and that as a world power, we have a duty to ensure basic human rights around the world. I believe in family and community. I am against abortion, in most cases. I believe in a balanced national budget and in reducing our national debt. I believe in controlled borders. I believe that hard work and determination will get you where you want to go.
However, socially, I lean more to the left. I believe in assisting those who are having a hard time, but I do not believe in supporting people for their lifetime, unless they are sick or disabled. I believe that families can come in many shapes, sizes and forms, that love is love is love. I believe that the welfare systems we have in place are indulgent and need to be regulated and overhauled. I believe that every person deserves basic respect and that every person should give basic respect.
I don't care where you are from, as long as you are here legally. I don't care about the color of your skin. I don't care about which religion you practice. I don't care about your political beliefs.
The only thing I really care about is if people are decent. Kind. Hardworking. Generous. Willing to give a hand to someone who has fallen.
So, I don't know where I fall anymore. I look at other Republicans and can not bring myself to identify with them. I look at Democrats and while I feel more comfortable in the company of Democrats recently, I don't really agree with them either.
For the time being, I will remain registered as a Republican, because I want to try to bring the party back from the edge that it is teetering on, but I have to say that I am an Independent. I will no longer vote the party line if I don't have enough information about the candidate. I will go out and get the information about the candidates and make a choice based on who I believe is a decent human being.
Do you find yourself floundering in your political beliefs?
